Probably the best way to get money transferred from overseas is to get a cheque in the overseas currency and present it at your bank My bank (NAB - free plug!) charge $10 flat rate to convert it and put it in my account. Of course if you're dealing with small amounts this is an expensive way of doing it but the alternatives are much more expensive.
I recently had 200 pounds sterling sent out from the UK and the fees for an international money order came to around 30 pounds, payable at the UK end. $10 at this end is a bargain in comparison!
