I can't see how it is ever a useful thing to do. You can toprope long pitches with 2 ropes tied together if you really want to (I've seen The Endless Pitch (50m) at Moonarie toroped)- and you can always use a static rope over the top a fair way so as to avoid damage to the cliff top if that's really an issue.

As for the the 'ethics' of it all - the 'requirement' that something be lead for a succesful ascent is pretty contrived anyway - but to claim this as meeting that otherwise arbitrary standard is ludicrous. Sure, climb something however you want, it makes no difference to me - but to subscribe to the arbitrary idea that you have to lead something to 'send' it, and then go to such extreme lengths to comply with it seems crazy to me.
