Hangboards are great...provided you use them once there up that is :) A worthwhile investment at about $150 for a metolious board from Paddy's. I believe riseholds (www.riseholds.com.au) also have there version of hangborad, (Rise holds supply our Adelaide gym and alot of other gyms and people with great holds).
Re hangborads versus door edge.....not as tough to start off with if your a newbie, and they also toughen your fingers up, as opposed to the smooth surfaces of a door frame. Another great option is the metolius rock rings (see http://www.metoliusclimbing.com/holds_boards_rockring.htm)...these puppies require alot more strength though!
