Windsurfing is good in Melbourne. The summer seabrease can work pretty well, depending on the season it can give you 16-18 knots a few evenings each week, but this isn't always a sure thing. If you're into kiteboarding you'll definitely get out a few evening each week with at least 12-14 knots almost guaranteed.

You get thumping northerlies (land heated offshore winds which you sail on further down the bay, still near town though) towards the end of spring and scattered through summer. These are often followed by a SW change and give good value.

Winter is also pretty good, you just have to wait for the systemic lows to wander up from Antarctica. There are still quite a few who brave the cold so you won't be alone.

If you're into waves you can, for example, drive 1.5 hrs to Torquay (SW of Melb.), or if flat water and speed is your kit there is always Sandy Point, where you sail only feet from a sandy spit. This is 3.5 hrs SE of Melb..

I now live OS and miss our weekends camping out at the Araps and Gramps BIG time.
