It's not just the US that will allow your more luggage. Our Aerolineas Argentinas flights allowed us 60kg each, as will other operators to South or North America.
I Don't clearly know why.

Going to NZ via Virgin, Bek and I each had a bike box rammed to the gunwales with stuff. Bek's was 40-odd kg. Mine was 52kg. No problem getting it there. On the way back they arced up and told me that each baggage handler is only allowed to lift 32kg. They weren't amused when I said 2 of them could do it.

I heard tale of a US airline that once tried to charge people per total passenger/luggage package weight. They were promptly sued.

Sorry JBM, that doesn't help you get your nuts onboard, but as with much of chockstone, the thread has well outgrown it's original mandate
