Allright, I'm going to do it. I am planning making a documentary on Australian climbing from the time of
Henry Barber's visit to that of Wolfgang Gullich's. The idea is really to catch the atmosphere of the times,
rather than hard and fast reporting on names and numbers. I'm actually not going to be able to do much on
it until the second half of the year and I expect it to be a labour of love that takes me maybe two or three
years. Similar pieces that have inspired me are Hard Grit and Dogtown and the Z Boys (a skating doco).
So…. if you were climbing in that time and would be willing to be interviewed, have photos from it or (rare I
know) video that you were willing to contribute, that would be greatly welcomed. I can't offer anything much
more than a free DVD and a thank you in the credits, I doubt it's ever going to be a big money spinner.
Other contributions that could be made will be reenactments - Reaper in white flares and the flat cap, India
in the worst of tights, getting dressed up as Jon Muir and soloing up and down Trojan…
I'm also interested in interviewing people who've done significant routes (such as Incipience, or Aslan, or
Punks for example) for a modern pespective on how they found them.
Finally, if you're going to the USA, England, Germany or New Zealand (that list will grow I'm sure) and
you're willing to interview someone, let me know, as there's major contributors to that part of Australian
climbing history that I won't be able to get to myself.
Thanks in advance,
Douglas Hockly
