Interesting that you mentioned this. A friend of mine recently informed me that this was the way that they set in parts of the UK. As you mentioned, it replicates outdoor climbing better, but unfortunately they found the world cup bouldering tough as they wern't used to the big movements (of tracking style setting)... I find the lactic factory often has a few excellent routes with many little footers.
