Helmets in an era of laissez-faire haute couture 7-Sep-2006 At 12:42:45 PM take!

It seems that the harness system on some helmets would protect from rockfall but not from a side impact (eg lead fall/swing into rock, maybe inverted etc).
I do remember once seeing a really lightweight, vented helmet (unfortunately branded CAMP) which was fully lined with styrofoam as per bike helmets and looked like it may do a good job of cushioning the neurons from all angles. I should have bought it but am a continual poor student.
After a couple of degrees I can now place a real dollar figure on the contents of my cranium. I'm wearing a hardshelled bicycle helmet for now, but still in the market for a proper climbing helmet similar to that outlined above. I should get one as it's an easy way of controlling the risk of a fatal accident down to a serious headache.
Some people ride motorbikes in a t-shirt/shorts some in leather, who's the more hardcore rider?.. Who knows? Who cares? Not wearing a helmet due to fashion, then suffering a head injury climbing... is this the truest definition of fashion victim? (Or is this statement a no-brainer? - groan).
IMO the fashion/safety thing has past. More pics etc of inspiring climbers in helmets could increase the number of helmets worn as hero-led young climbers come up through the ranks and make it the norm. Its a meme that will probably win with the right environmental tweaks.
