So you're saying that if it was chalk applied from hands (with all the natural oils etc) that it could be removed by S&W, but not in this instance because it was applied directly?

I've used soap and water in the past with excellent results on multiple rock types and to remove chalk both sullied by human lard and unsullied. You've forgotten that rock isn't completely clean ie. it's salty and as we all know can occasionally be "greasy". If you wash with enough water there won't be any soap scum left over. Actually the patch may only stand out because it is so much cleaner than the surrounding area.

Regardless - it's probably worth getting a flake from the base and testing the two "theories" - my bet is that a bit of soap and some elbow grease will strip it off and that there is no need to risk scarring the rock (or worse - yourself) with some H+ c--ktail.

Perhaps the moderator could set up a vote for this "burning" issue - The Acid Test.

btw soap doesn't actually "dissolve" - it emulsifies.
