In 1998 I took ice screws wrapped in duct tape to South America as hand luggage. They asked what I had in my bag. When I told them ice screws for climbing they gave me a funny look and let me go through. Didn’t even want to look at them.
Then in 2003 I accidentally took my butane stove on as hand luggage. They had a look at Sydney Airport and let me through.
A friend also tried to take an ice axe as carry on to NZ. He got it through customs check carrying it in his hand and then carried it in his hand onto the plane until a hostess took it off him and stowed it in a locked compartment.
