You are allowed to take unreasonable risks when you are climbing, but you are not allowed to do it at work. That is the law, and it's also because someone else (your employer) is responsible and liable for your injury.

There's a galaxy of gloves out there; you just need to get the right sort. Surgeons wear gloves. If they can do it, then so can landscapers. Where I work, people are expected to wear multiple different gloves for different purposes.

This reminds me of reading in the newspaper a few weeks ago about why some Americans drive without seatbelts. A truck driver said he does really short trips of only a mile or two at a time, and it just takes too long to put his seat belt on and off all the time. Wearing gloves is like driving with a seat belt on. If you are using the right sort then you just get used to it, and feel naked without them.

I do most of my scrubby bushwalking with riggers gloves, and wouldn't head into the Victoria Range without them these days.
