By "Horse Race" I assume you mean this weekend (Nov 2nd/3rd), which many are making into a long weekend with the Melbourne Cup holiday... Yes, there is likely to be quite few at Araps, since the VCC is also holding some kind of gathering there. It shouldn't be anywhere near as crowed as Easter break though. If you want to get away from people, just head into the Grampians. Re fire ban. Good question. The offical word is "Mount Arapiles will be a fuel-stoves-only area for a six month period from 1st November to 30th April each year". So, yeah, gas burners are okay. I've never heard of an area down here being totally closed due to fire danger. Sounds like you've got a great trip planned. Have fun!
