It could also have been a case where your belayer got physically moved around (i.e closer to the cliff or higher) due to the sometimes sudden take of the rope... If you are belaying on the ground, and not anchored to something its pretty easy to get pulled around a little, especially if there's a weight or direction discrepancy.
