Go to Arizona! I started climbing In Flagstaff, where there are five different kinds of rocks within an hours drive and you can ride a bike to several different bouldering areas (remember Sharma's movie Rampage). The people are laid back, rent's cheap and the night life kicks ass but it may be hard to find a decent job. It's 4 hours from J-Tree, 3 hours from Red Rocks (vegas), and 4 hours to Indian Creek. The local area offers great limestone sport and bouldering and UNBELIEVABLE basalt crack climbing. If you drive a half-hour south you'll find an immense wildeness of unexploited sandstone spires in Sedona.
Boulder has great climbing, but the climbers are assholes and the town is uper-middle-class America exemplified! Loud, Abnoxious, Arrogant, f--- Boulder! The rest of Colorado is great, try down south by Telluride.
Maybe go to Salt Lake. They have great climbing, but you have to deal with the Mormons.
Seattle is not a bad place to be a climber. Portland's not bad either. Arcata, CA has a wealth of rock.
In the States you can camp on the side of the road, leagally on any public land, for up to two weeks. This includes National Forest, Wilderness areas and BLM land. The cops might check you out, but just show them your concealed weapons permit and they'll leave you alone:-)
J-tree is a great place to be a bum, very similar to Arapiles Lifestyle, except I think you can get more climbing done at J-tree.
Good luck and enjoy. |
