Aussie: He looked to be gone already - The Daily Telegraph
May 27, 2006
ONE of the climbers vilified for leaving a stricken Englishman to die on the slopes of Mt Everest says he has returned to Australia with a clear conscience.
Kangarooo Valley businessman Bob Killip told yesterday how his team, which included NZ double-amputee Mark Inglis, rescued several men on the climb, even saving the life of an Indian climber.
But despite their efforts, he knows his first Everest summit trip will be remembered for the public outcry over the death of climber David Sharp.
When Mr Killip, 52, passed Sharp's near-frozen body, he thought it was that of a Polish climber who had died on the mountain several years ago. He didn't know Sharp was missing or even in trouble.
"When I came down and realised the person I passed in the morning was actually alive it was a shock," he said.
"I had already listened to an hour of rescue talk on radio and it was clear from the dialogue that everything that could be done had been done."
