They had a go. Paul "hit the wall" on a second summit attempt and turned around. He made a decision that didn't jeopardise himself or others responsible for his well-being (guides and Sherpas). I respect his personal judgement.

After reading about the fatalities each year on the commercial hills I really wonder how the Sherpa people come to terms with this western attitude towards "the value of life". They generally show overwhelming compassion in these situations, and often implement the rescues/attempts.
