Hi Christian,
Congrats on an excellent comp. I was in the intermediate mens and the range of abilities (necessarily wide in this category) were well catered for by the excellent problems. Having the problems also sorted by grade up on the wall assisted us in selecting our next tick - after the initial rush.
The criteria for which section you enter are very clear (based on roped and boulder climbing grades) - and the problems ticked by the placegetters in the intermediate are within that range. No problems there.
The comp is certainly not about winning for me. It is about doing your best, in a competitive but collaborative environment, and most of all having lots of fun on a complete set of new problems. Congratulations to all of the route setters. Lots of imagination and a wide variety of types of problems. I'm not tall, about 5' 10" in the old numbers, but I thought the problems catered for varying heights pretty well. You can't set indoors and solve that problem on all routes.
Setting all these problems is an enormous task and well worth it from what I heard on the day. The crowd loved it. Seeing better climbers solve the same problems is great. Seeing younger, taller and stronger climbers (with less technique!!) solve some of them is not so much fun. But that's climbing. Wher's my rack of wigglies?
