Some of the best climbing stories are wildly inaccurate. I'm sure this one gets further exagerated with each telling. Still, it's a memorable tale.

Once he had both tails to ascend on he'd be safe. I'd imagine he ascended back up to the rap anchor (or at least until he had both tails), reset the abseil and trusted in luck that they wouldn't jam a second time.

The fireside tales got progressively taller after this one. There was mention of some mythical dude they'd heard about who'd fallen off a snow covered mountain, still roped in, but unanchored. After plunging several pitches with the rope flying down after him, it (the rope), somehow jammed in a crack and stopped his fall. No knot, just the rope itself had jammed.

The truth is out there... though it tends to hide from the campfire.
