Victorian Re-Bolting. Do you agree with them? 7-Feb-2006 At 9:44:20 PM Kingerz

The old bolts around Melbourne are an accident waiting to happen. One dead climber at a place like Ben Cairn and the whole place could be shut down. Idiot rangers in Qld just shut down the Burleigh Heads cliff, for example. At the Youies, the bolts on top of Question of Ethics were reported to be very dangerous (one lifting out with minimal pressure I recall) yet I have seen schoolkids top roped on those two bolts in the past. Thankfully, rebolters replaced them.

A great anchor on Ship Rock was cut down by rangers and now the whole place is under moss.

Many of these posts can be treated with skepticism: I have met some of these people and found that some can't even belay and have hardly climbed outside at all, yet they give plenty of advice on Chockstone!. Not all climbers who post here know what they are talking about!

Neil's point about Rangers reading these posts makes me paranoid. But free speech is important and any Ranger worth the name will understand that consensus comes through debate.

I have never placed a bolt myself and even made sure that the minor crag Egg Rock didn't need any when it was developed. But still, rebolters are essential.
