Re route descriptions:

In the majority of cases, wouldn't the creative writing have been done by the first ascentionist, who would then have submitted the route description to the guidebook compiler?

Obviously this doesnt apply when route descriptions are re-written (as Gerry has done), but in many cases guidebook writers have to publish a description un-altered because they have no knowledge of the route themselves.

Who then has ownership of the route description? The writer, or the publisher? At the end of the day my opinion would be that the act of submitting a route desciption by an individual is an act of donating that description to the climbing community, and it becomes free for anyone to use. This seems reasonable for the basic 'climb up 5m then left to the top' type description, but becomes murky for more artistic descriptions when creative time and effort has been put into a more enjoyable / usable product.

On the Tassie Guide, I agree none of the Hobart local crags are really worthy of inclusion. Lowdina is a good winter crag (when Mt Wellington is hard to get on), but there arnt many people in tassie for climbing trips in winter.
