If you're climbing in any of the drier areas of Australia, you may come across these large ants, as recently photographed by some US soldiers here on a training exercise. While they don't exist in colonies as large as say the Siafu of the Serengeti, they are considerably more dangerous and you do NOT want to camp within range of their nests. Think what a regular ant can take on, and then scale it up to what you see below and you'll get the idea.
