How often do you fall onto your own trad gear? 17-Jan-2006 At 9:15:12 PM armstp
Oddly enough I have never liked risking a fall on a bolt unless it is backed up by a piece of trad gear which I have placed or inspected myself. Thinking back through probably several dozen 3m+ leader falls in my 30+ years of climbing I can’t recall ever falling on a bolt [grabbing them yes, standing on them yes…falling on them no]. Whilst I am sure that good modern well placed bolts of the type Neil puts in are excellent, having placed a few carrots in my time I don’t really trust them. When I have to make moves, particularly on steep rock, where there is only a bolt between me and a serious fall I become worried in a way that would never happen if I had a good bit of trad gear which I had placed myself.
