I didn't start climbing until I was well into my 30's and the kids were almost into the teens. They get dragged along on trips out from time to time, but mostly I train indoors and that's cool. Other mums are out doing whatever they do, I just happen to love climbing. No partner to growl at us. You just go as often as you are motivated to get organised.

It's one of the things I want them to experience so they know there's life outside the suburban delusion when they're older and wondering "what's the point?" Climbing is a gift.

Last time I was at Araps I met a bloke who started climbing at 50. He's 60 now and leads 25's. I was like "Yippee! There's hope!" He and his wife don't have kids at home any more, so they're out doing what they love together. It would help if we weren't given the impression by advertising that a, life ends at 30 or b, there's no life other than consumption. Make it up as you go along.
