I was under the impression that lark's foot (aka girth hitch) knots reduced the strength of slings by some hideous number - 30% or so, IIRC. Although I still find myself using them from time to time, I don't think you'd really want that much weakness built into your protection. For piece of mind, I'd get them professionally sewn. A shop in Katoomba supposedly will do it for you, if you're up that way.
