I reckon you got it down pat, JCP.

If citationx want's to say he ticked a climb, with a rest, I reckon that's a fair call. He's no more wrong or right than a person who climbs to the crux of a climb upteen times before finishing it, and calling it an onsight. Or a person who reads the guidebook before the onsight.

I'm probably a bit snappy because I'm reading about structural equation modeling and the neurological basis of memory instead of climbing and adding more dogs to the ticklist (hehe).

Hey Ronny, you're right. It's impossible to communicate without assigning some label to what you're discussing. But as long as the labels are arbitrary, the discussion will continue... I think the problem here for me is that there's an unofficial "value" system to the different ticks. Onsights are better than flashes. Redpoints are better than pinkpoints. That's cool. But no one can ever tell another climber that a dog isn't a tick. It's completely up to the climber to make up his or her mind as to what a tick is. A tick for that person.... Is that it, JCP???

I'll stop myself from launching into rambling on the subjectiveness of experience...
