Do you actually say "Show me if you can belay first"? I'm thinking some people might be insulted/sensitive about this kind of thing.

Nothing wrong with self-preservation. Fits in well with Darwin's theory. I'm a newbie so probably nobody trusts me but I feel confident that I'm careful enough and at least I take the job seriously recognising that I have another's life in my hands.....well maybe not at the gym but I may have their next few months of walking in my hands.
