Well Folks, thank you all for your suggestions, points of view, idea etc.

it seems that there does not ap[pear to be any kind of set rules / procedures for non verbal communication but saying that neil ideas on sound direction / basic rope tuggs seem to be the go.

you can forget the radio stuff cos i don't climb enough multi pitch to warrent the expense and beside mucking about with wires and radios etc whilst trying desperatly trying to place gear in a non exisitant crack does no really appeal.......but thanks anyway.

what do the mountain rescue boys do in these situations? do they have a set routine?

As someone said it comes down to your relationship with your climbing partner and how well you know them.

anyway i will take all this advice on board and hopefully the next time i am in a situation your words of advice will spring to mind
