I wouldn't let the age of a camera fool you either. Good glass, rather than modern glass creates sharp images. As a general rule, a newer whiz-bang camera can do a lot of the work for you (focussing, exposure, image stabilising...) which can either improve or detract from your own efforts - of simply save you that effort. They don't necessarily effect the quality of the image.
Quality low-speed transparency film counts for a heck of a lot.

I've got to fix my old Ricoh - I love to have a manual camera as a back-up, especially in the mountains where cold kills modern high battery usage cameras pretty easily.
