yeh youre absolutely right but the thing is as soon as the gyms change to an easy/medium/hard grading hundreds of people will come and say
"we need more specific grades, how bout having a system like the ewbank system"
and then your back to where u started so why not just stick to what we have now and not confuse things by adding another grading system!

That said i think grades in gyms are more designed to compare to each other rather than any basis of outdoor climbs, but with heaps of routes in the gym it is impossible to get entirely consistent grades (just the same as outdoors - cruise up somthin hard/ cant do easy climbs - its all about the style)
