Im the Traffic Engineer for a Council (Hobart). Its 90% report writing, design work, meetings etc (i.e. desk) and 10% site visits. If you want a job that fits in well with lots of climbing, i'd suggest finding something desk based, working for an organisation that allows a flexible approach to your working hours (for example allowing you to work extra hours one day and to leave early the next). If you live somewhere with climbable rock close by, you will find that during daylight saving it is possible to work full time as well as climb on rock a lot.

For example in summer I am able to leave work at 3:30-4pm two or three nights a week to climb on Mt Wellington. This gives up to 5 hours of climbing time up to three nights a week. Thats a system that works well for me.

Even better would be a job where you had a consolidated period of non-stop work, followed by an extended period of holidays to allow frequent long trips. Im not sure how you could get that with any form of work security though (maybe being a teacher?)
