Just wanted to point out that I don't consider gear on "easier" routes to be free for the taking. It's not a question of elitism here. I think a lot of climbers( of whatever ability) would also feel similar. While it might seem odd to have the gear fixed on Feral Chicken(21) or Tanin(19) or whatever for a while, in my mind most people would leave it. I wonder if a useful analogy is if someone leaves their car parked on the side of the road for days/weeks do you assume you can have it !!?

As for the ethical issues raised about blowing onsights and visual offence etc they are a whole new can of worms!. I personally favour a sportclimbing approach that is (I hope) of minimum impact, but it is a very particular approach to the variety of activities that is "rock climbing". I think climbers in general are thoughtful and concientious people as evidenced by Mike TS and all our experiences over the years, camping and climbing etc, but there are obviously quite a few people out there playing a different game. I've had gear taken before at Arapiles and back in New Zealand so it would be good to get the issue out there.
Now where was my club......
