I agree with an earlier poster - guidebooks should have BOTH types of index - "by grade" and "by alphabetical route name".

Otherwise I've been spoilt by the Gramps and Araps guidebooks which are definately the benchmarks, they do a great job of poroviding of what I consider the essential information:

* nice mix of humour, history and bare route information
* access information/maps (this is key and hard to do well for people driving into new areas in the gramps for the first time) - especially when navigating in the dark. Ensuring that the guide mentions kms past major impossible to miss land marks is really good.
* clear photographic diagrams of maps with routes drawn in and numbered. These diagrams should also make it easy to look at the diagram and know that line 13 is "Climb X, grade Y"
* the climb info itself.
