My dogtag is smooth on all sides. The idea is that you don't have time to evacuate casualties in combat. But you break the dogtag in half, secure one half with the owner (between the teeth if you didn't like him, I suppose), then take the other half with you. Then you can always find the owner later on, and ship him or her home.... The "between the teeth" deal is probably more of a pub tale or stuff-you-post-on-a-web-page, to inflate your own ego and all those manly things ;-)
