Your argument only indicates that there is no need for university climbing clubs. But these days there are over 40 different sports supported by the "Australian University Sports" (the national body) and many of the sports unless you knew someone already involved in it, you wouldn't know where to look to take up the sport.

Sports only form a very small number of all the clubs on campus, UNSW about 40 Sports Association Clubs and 160 CASOC clubs, the Casoc includes those sports that don't have a formal competition such as caving. I notice that that Hang gliding is no longer listed as a SA club, so I don't know if it's folded or just become a CASOC club. The SA's Outdoor Club incorporates about 6 different activities.

The Casoc clubs incorporates all the facility clubs (which do a whole heap more than put on the lunch time BBQ's), various social (such as various forms of dancing or music) and then the ethnic groups, lifestyle, religious and political groups.

One thing you you get from getting involved with the clubs on the committee is management skills. Tell me where else a 18-20 year old can learn to write budget submission, organise events for a few hundred people, etc.

A university is far more than a place to learn about your chosen field, it's an opportunity to take outside the sheltered life you've lived at home and school and introduce you to the rest of the world. Sure you can opt to stay in your comfort zone, but if you’re sensible you grasp the opportunity and run with it, because you’re unlikely to have the same opportunity again.
