It's pretty safe, probably on par with Europe. The chances are that nothing will ever happen, but there is always a small chance. You just need to be careful not to hitchhike by yourself etc. Common sense really rules as it does in the USA, avoid areas that look run down after dark etc.
There are plenty of backpacker places around all the makor cities and around the major tourist destinations. I suspect a few of the younger members of this forum could also find some space on their floors.
