i understand that top roping is not an option for many sport climbs and i agree that making tracks at the top of a cliff needs to be taken into account (although i think it is highly unlikely that this is practically ever the motivation for bolting a climb, lower offs aside). I am not trying to start an ethics of bolting war i just think that this is an option that is ignored for no logical reason and it irritates me. Placing bolt is always a compromise, this does not mean it is always or even normally wrong, but it does mean that the alternatives need be considered with an open mind. I strongly suspect and hence wrote this post that top roping is not generally seen as a viable option and this is my concern.
