I was waiting for someone to correct gfdonc's comments on dynamic range.
Print fillm has a much better contrast range than slide film, especially if you're comparing the likes of very contrasty slide film (Velvia 50) with a low contrast print film like NPH 400, which should be rerated to 320.
I personally think Provia is the way forward if you want accurate tones in your shots, I've scene a few pale skinned climbers come out looking quite sun burnt wtih Velvia. I guess you've got to strike the balance of creating a nice saturated cliff line, ferns, etc with the skin tones of the climber you are photographing. I still think Velvia is one of the best emulsions out there, however Provia does have a finer grain.
For snow shots, another option might be to use a graduated ND filter, try and get a nice even contrast range through the whole shot. Better yet take photos really early or late in the day if possible (probably not though).
