I've been utilising a "hybrid" approach for medium format & large format photography that provides "old fashioned quality with digital speed/low cost" =I take shots on Velvia tansparencies/Reala print film & have the negs/trannys commercially drum scanned onto a 75 Mbyte file & printed on an LED Printer (Fuji crystal archive paper) @ poster size = pin sharp with great colours. (costs $50/poster vs $200 for a hand finished version) For 35 mm still use the "old process" for prints but scan on flatbed scanner as jpegs to send over net. As soon as a >10 Mpix "full frame" Digi camera (with sensor = 24mm x 36mm) comes out (that will accept Nikon lenses) @ < $2KAUD I'll race out & buy one. Kodak make one @ $8K ! Re earlier posts re snow shots = B&W film captures more shades of grey = has a dynamic range of around 8-10 stops vs print @ 6-7 stops vs Slide @ 5-6 stops. Alas the only way to have all bases covered with outdoor actions shots is through low loss lenses with lots of glass = lots of weight = high risk of damage/$cost & reduced mobility = a real catch 22 !
