Exactly My Point Neil. First Ascents may have been recorded with an aid move in the past, but ethics change. These days not many people would yo yo a route and call it a legitimate ascent. Whatever, it doesn't matter what style you like to climb a route in, but I agree with Dalai when he says the person who does the first continous, no fall, no rest ascent of a route is the first ascentionist. Historically it is nice to recognise the person with the vision to establish a route, a classic example might be Lord of the Rings at Arapiles. Everyone knows how close Kim Carrigan came to doing this, I'm sure he probably did it with one rest, but he is not the first ascentionist. BA, it is not "bad" to pull on a "silver jug" on a route you are trying to do the first ascent of... however, I don't believe it is a legitimate first ascent. The climber trying that futuristic project should not walk away and leave for the next generation, but train harder and commit themselves to doing the first ascent. How do you think groundbreaking routes like Action Directe got done? Modern ethics are the way forward.
