When the fires end. 19-May-2003 At 5:10:45 PM gemmaw

Along the line of this subject, does anyone know much about the integrity of bolts in granite after an intense fire?

I was recently up at Mt Coree in the ACT and along parts of the cliff, particularly where tea-tree had been close to the base, the rock was blackened and exfoliating. I also noticed where the fire had obviously reached quite high on the wall that bolts were blackened. Most of these bolts are fixed brackets which I assumed use expansion bolts, but there were also a few glue-ins on some of the routes. Luckily most of the glue-ins are quite high on the wall so probably did not get the full impact of the fire, but I can't imagine that fire would be too good for the strength of the glue (lower on the face there was a drill hole that had been filled and the surface of the glue was quite ashy).

Does anyone know if the strength of expansion bolts or glue-in U-bolts would be compromised after fire? Have any test been done?

Gemma
