A notice in the paper reported the passing Ian Speedie on Monday, aged 81. I think I only ever met him once or twice over the years, but his name appeared on many first ascents in the early days of Victorian climbing. Any climber who has looked at the North Wall of the Buffalo Gorge will have considered the mighty Emperor on which Ian was part of the first ascent team, an impressive achievement for 1966.
Also, as BA noted on the passing of Mike Stone, "Those of a certain age will have used the Green Arapiles guide that he co-authored with Ian Speedie." |
