Chocky started 6 Jun 2002 at 5:35:33 PM ...
Yesterday 17 Dec 2017 was the first day in its history that it did not have a post made to it, although about 90 people logged in to check out the non-action...
In the last couple of months we have been down to a couple of posts on some days, and sometimes even spammers have provided some light reading material!
Even the resident trolls have been quiet lately...
What's going on?
(* I note a recent [sic] thread on Crag X titled The Graveyard, and a comment within suggesting it's a memorial Site!)

Claw
local FB groups now supply much of the much-needed ego swelling tomfoolery

Fatboy
Chockstone dying ? Yeah I think it is too, and to echo a few others' opinion, I reckon there's three real reasons:
hopelessly outdated forum software that is clunky, buggy and has no integration with anything else - I have also repeatedly offered help here and been met with crickets, and
Content is poor - although this is possibly more "effect" than "cause" with disappearing numbers, poor software and the fact that most current discussion in climbing is best linked to specific areas and/or climbs which makes thecrag are far more effective platform, and
the inane trolling - it started a long time ago and I reckon this has been death by a thousand cuts

Daliah
I spend time on a number of forums across different interests, and all are slowing with more people moving across to FB and other social media.
..............................................................................................................................................
Ima reackons Fatboys got it way wrong and Daliahs got it way right....

Time to hava thread where its way OK to wander between topics/threads seemlessly...

Smithrock.com: Were others placing routes on rappel before you, and did you know if it was being done that way in Europe?

Alan: No, I had no idea. It wasn't until '85, I think, before we started to understand what they were doing in Europe. Mainly when Kim Carrigan and Johnny Woodward and Jeff Weigand came to Smith in '85, they let us know what was going on.

...KC's two canadian climbing buddies , preppin for the second ascent of Pacific Ocean Walll in 1977.

Eric Weinstein(left)
'...He gave up climbing some time after the PO Wall in 1977, and eventually moved to northern California, where he was attending community college. Eric died of liver cancer in early 1984....'

'...The story I heard about Eric's end was that he was living in Arcadia, going to school, got sick with pancreatic cancer and when he knew his time was near, hiked off into the Trinity Alps and passed away by himself in his tent....'

Daryl Hatton(right)
'...A life spent conquering mountains and cliffs came to a tragic end on the weekend when renowned Victoria rock climber Daryl Hatten fell to his death from a tree.

Hatten, 49, slipped from a rain-soaked arbutus tree in Langford Saturday when a cat he was trying to save took several swipes at him, friend David Parsons said.

The cat's owner called a tree-climbing company owned by Parsons, who recommended the job to Hatten, and lent him some climbing gear. But Hatten wasn't safely strapped in when he climbed around a large limb and came face-to-face with the large, black house cat, said Parsons.

"The cat was swiping at him and he moved further out on the limb, lost his balance and fell," said Parsons, after talking with West Shore RCMP about their investigation into the accident.

Hatten fell about 20 metres to a rocky patch below the tree near Swallow Place, he said. An ambulance and the Langford Fire Department were called to the scene at about 1 p.m. to stabilize him and take him to hospital. He was pronounced dead from internal injuries about an hour later, said Parsons.

"He was happy-go-lucky and was going to get paid $75 for rescuing that cat," said girlfriend and roommate Debbie Graham...'

‘...Kim reaches us and suddenly has the grim realization that he has forgotten our
vital life support and mellowing-out formula – the grass. Darryl begins
to foam at the mouth and I have to beat him over the head to stop
him from chewing through Kim’s rope. Kim moves past our dagger
glances to throw a Cheshire grin of rabbit-trap teeth at us
and says “ I think I did a bad thing ! “. This shall be a truly clean ascent…’
...........................................................................................................................................
...Ima puts it to you...KC... that the reason you had the drive and focus to make the famous 2nd ascent , was BECAUSE you cats weren't toten off ya titz.....you did a GOOD thing, KC...

A novel idea for a good thread Imahexlizard, and thanks for your innovation, as I’ve enjoyed revisiting some of the links again.

Maybe to make re-finding stuff easier later, could you put the U-tube titles with the links (?), as our climbing history is worth preserving well.

...this one is still etched into imaz brain from those daze...dude on beach swept to oblivion by the liquid freight-train...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IuUygn7BZis

'...Anukul Charoenkul - who owns the Viewpoint
Restaurant - shot the video. He said his restaurant
was full of tourists when the tsunami struck at
around 1030 local time (0330 GMT) on 26 December.
He explained he had received an early warning
of the impending disaster from his brother, who
was at a different location along the coast
which had already been struck. Charoenkul
therefore had time to prepare his camera and
catch the moment the tsunami hit Khao Lak
from the third floor of the building where his
restaurant is located. He said that he shouted
at the people on the beach to warn them,
telling them to run, but they could not hear...'
