In regards to Tokyo. There are little gyms nearly everywhere mate. Think lactic (but 1/2 the size). The density is just crazy.
The bigger ones I liked Dais project gym the best. Hold density to the max. It's in Yokohama area though (so around a 45min train trip from central Tokyo) awesome gym though. Wish Aus could do half as good. Yujis gym is super nice as well . Smaller but very nice construction. new holds and great angles. West side of Tokyo. He has another in saitama area. It was good but an epic for us to get too.
I wouldn't bother with roped climbing. They seem to have very low height roofs. Couldn't see any auto belays strangely. Was cool though as they are all lead. Enjoy mate
