How many people use thecrag.com to tick? |

Hi,
Posting here under my day job - mapping for ParksVic. I'm (trying to) calculate usage statistics for Arapiles. There are records of about 6000 ascents/year from the good folks at thecrag.com. I live in Nati, there are at a guess 50 people who climb regularly in town, and I can think of only 5 who use thecrag to tick the climbs they do. These range from the OTT OCD tick-every-training-lap (ah, Adam Demmert...) to ticking every route you've done once (no matter if you've done it 73 times like Wend on Morfydd) to patchy tickers.
Going on this there may be about 60 000 ascents a year... which sounds like a lot! Even a more conservative 50k is a fair few.
I'm well aware of the limitations of this poll - I'm asking a subset of people who use an online service if they use another online service - it's likely to be a pretty skewed result, but just trying to get another data point. It would be good to go to the cliff and ask people on a busy day but Parks Wimmera is shortstaffed enough as it is.
Thanks!
Douglas

Parks Vic using thecrag to quantify climbing is as bad as Transport for Victoria using Strava to quantify cycling

... yes, but it's going through the common sense filter of duglash, so might come out the other side as something more than half useful given that he is aware of its limitations.

I only use thecrag to market my own routes (unsuccessfully ), and to counteract grade inflation by downgrading already stiff routes.
Could you add that option to the poll?

For what it's worth, I think 60 000 pitches climbed per year sounds plausible. Surely more than 10 000 over two weeks at easter?

Under my day job, PV says 70,000 visitors/year. That probably means 70,000 visitor days per year, you could confirm that in house.
Say that 80% would be climbers ( a random number that I just made up), that would mean 56,000 climber visitor days.
Given that the number of pitches that a person would vary, even if the average was only pitches 2 per day, you're already over 100,000.
Even if the number of climber visitor days was less, doing between 4 and 8 pitches in a day is no big deal, so it could be even higher.

That 70,000 number is from last time they had car counters on the mt - about 15-20 yrs ago I think. They assume 3 people per car and multiply by that. given that some are busses with 20 kids maybe not too unreasonable... but pretty darn rubbery!
I've colated all the data for overnight stays, this is just another avenue to get another perspective on usage data... and it will be rubbery too!

Counting cars going to top of Mt or The Pines?
... Even so, tourists are not necessarily climbers, nor are wives, kids, etc.
From original post...
>patchy tickers
Mine’s been done, but that won’t affect your results!
Heh, heh, heh.

Wives? Seriously?
According to this very scientific poll 57% of wives/partners climb!
And my wife and I belay our kids on climbs every time we get out there!
And wouldn't all visitors (other than the guides & school teachers) be considered "toursits"
tourist

Fair enough (from your experience) Martym, and I could have phrased my comment better by saying something like 43% of wives don't climb!
Heh, heh, heh.
Interestingly enough I remembered that poll, but not its result, and I note that I voted 'no' on it as my contribution at the time without further clarification back then.
My wife and kids don't climb even though they have had plenty of opportunity to do so and my perspective is warped differently, hence the not necessarily portion of my comment on this thread.

43% of spouses.
I would say "partner" but in climbing that has a far more important meaning ;)
