Agreed, it's also often the USB port that gets dodgy. Especially if it is/was intermittent I'd try there first. Either way, the solution is the same: Unless its a smaller style portable, then they usually have a standard drive inside, just take the case apart, take the drive itself out, and plug it into a spare SATA port, plus some power and it should work.
