Mr Gribble has spoken, now be warned fellow Chockstoners ... He must be obeyed. (Thanks Grib). Nah, Gnagnuts, fair point young chap, good question but the trials and tribulations of a 'rise through the ranks' were not dissimilar to now I suspect - 'cept it was mainly trad, rather scary six days a week and to stand out one had to be more shagadelic than Jerry, Ron and HB - despite their fast bikes and/or cars. Read it and weep mate. Then judge. That's precisely what the publishers did ... Cheers, Andy.
