Not Victoria, but ... Booroomba Rocks and the Orrorral Ridge in Namadgi National Park are still off limits, also Gibraltar Peak in Tidbinbilla Reserve, and The Fortress, in the forestry area just outside Tidbinbilla. National Parks are slowly re-opening popular BBQ areas and picnic spots. Climbing areas are expected to be re-opened on June 1st, but check on this. I heard that someone had gear confiscated by rangers (this may just be an urban legend) - if you're visiting the ACT, the Namadgi National Park info centre near Tharwa has the details, or any of the climbing shops should know.
There was a press release the other day from Geoscience Australia, about the granite boulders in the forests, which have exfoliated because of the heat. It sounds as if Legoland and the Cloisters and all the other nice outcrops on the Orroral Ridge may be a bit different, when we get back there ... meanwhile there's little Wickerslack Crag, good place for beginners, just outside Queanbeyan. Just turn left at the car body, go past the abandoned mattress and the rusting iron, past the abandoned quarry ... actually it's quite nice if you avoid looking back towards Queanbeyan ... Saturday was a lovely autumn day, the river was pretty, the climbing easy ... |
