Roland was a true friend to many and a great source of inspiration. He visited Australia many times in the 80s and 90s, and may have been responsible for the first power drill in the country, an old bosch thing that was cutting edge battery tech in its day.
A fantastic and driven climber, he was never single minded. He enjoyed the beauty of the place in a way that many travelers miss. Beach trips, chasing emus through the sand dunes, mountain trips, sniffing the enticing Sugar Magnolia and of course endless summer days of lounging in the diving tree at the overflowing Toolondo.
Generous in the extreme he shared his occasional bountiful supplies of money with the poor wasters of the pines, shouting Willows milkshakes and Ian the health food dudes pasties for all and sundry. Every old banger car he bought on his trips was passed on gratis to whoever needed one.
Roland lived the dream till the end, setting a bit of an example that the day is for living and loving.
One of a kind and an honour to have bumped into.
