|Ni Hao Adventure Timers!
The first Adventure time event for 2016 is happening on Thursday 25th February at Stucco Housing Co-op - 197 Wilson St, Newtown.
This month our speakers are Tom Denniss and Deborah Johnston.
Tom will be sharing some stories of his epic run around the world in 2012/13 and Deborah will be giving us an insight into the big, bad world of cave diving around Sydney.
Doors open at 7:30pm for a 8:00pm start.
BYO Drinks and snacks.
Amongst other things Tom is a scientist, author, family man and the fastest person to run around the world.
Yes, you read that right, In 2012/13 he RAN around the world covering the required 26,232 kilometres in just over 20 months, beating the old record by 40 days.
We're not sure if he planned it this way but the trip took exactly 622 days to run the equivalent of 622 marathons. Along the way he ran across 19 countries on every continent except for Antarctica and Africa.
When he set off he only had a general route plan and the desire to not only traverse longitudes, but also latitudes, which allowed for a greater range of geographic, climatic, and cultural experiences and led to some amazing adventures along the way.
Deborah Johnston is a Sydney based speleologist with a passion for exploring and documenting naturally forming underground cave networks, both above and below water. Her hunt for new caves has taken her all around Australia and New Zealand for over a decade with the Sydney University Speleological Society (SUSS).
Deborah's exploration involves extensive research and planning, bush-bashing, climbing, abseiling, bolting, swimming, digging, squeezing, and lots and lots and LOTS of crawling. Once Deborah and her team of experienced cave divers reach the waters edge, they don modified scuba diving equipment to continue their exploration by plunging into the cold, pitch black water.
The past few years Deborah has been exploring at our local Jenolan Caves with a steady stream of significant and surprising discoveries. These dives are harsh, deep and technical, with little or no visibility, sharp and unstable rock, and tight restrictions.. all requiring creative gear configurations, meticulous planning, and nerves of steel to succeed.
Join us to hear about her underground adventures including rare footage.
This is a free event, but we always pass the hat around for welcome donations (a gold coin is fine) to cover presents for our speakers, projector bulbs and occasionally travel expenses for any speakers coming from afar.
See you on the 25th!
