All,

The National Library of Australia wants to take a snapshot of the whole Chockstone website and add it to their PANDORA Archive to "ensure that Australians have access to their documentary heritage now and in the future".

The forum content will be excluded (because I can't imagine how to get permission from everyone past and present), but everything else would be copied including articles in the guide and tech tips contributed by Chockstone members, and all those lovely photos people have sent in for the gallery.

If anyone (in particular the authors of said contributions) have any objections to this taking place please post them here or contact me privately.

Thanks.

The General discussion forum would certainly meet the criteria for a Pandora's box.

By posting on a public forum, users give permission to it being copied and displayed elsewhere surely? Newspaper's seem to have no issue copy-pasting internet chat - though they are hardly an ethical bastion to be held to comparison?
I can't imagine anyone ever complaining their post is being displayed in the library when you can find it on google?

Hmm.

I think this is a good thing, as our heritage needs to be celebrated.

Some questions, with a statement first...
Probably the most interesting sections of Forum from a heritage point of view, are Gear Lust, and Trip Reports.
The Gear Lust section suffers the same fate of multi-numerous contributors vs permission from same, but the Trip Reports may not?
Having said that, I am also aware of shortened TR's due to hack/anti-hack measures...

Is it possible to single out only Trip Reports from Forum? AND...
Is it possible to choose a date for such 'snapshot' prior to the hacks which caused truncation?

What is the difference between NLA performing this task and such websites as The Wayback Machine having done the same thing already?

I'm all for it. l routinely use Pandora to find government documents that ''mysteriously" dissapear off the web after a change of government.
